Can you believe it's been over a decade since the fairy type was introduced in Pokemon?
I remember it being a tad controversial at first with some thinking it was silly but hey, I always though it was fun and they really helped nerf dragons with their immunity and all

And fairy to nerf dragons Hydreigon in particular who went to having to just two rare weaknesses to Ice and Dragon to gaining a huge 4x weakness to fairy

Even though it honestly makes a lot of sense for a monster-collecting game where many creatuers are based on folklore to begin with to have a more general "fair folk" category amongst the Ghosts and the Dragons. If anything, it's weird that it took them that long.

Their goblins, trickster, nature spirits. That sort of thing
Only one that's kind of weird to me is Galarian Weezing, but it explains in its dex and lore that it purifys the land and air wherever it goes. It cleans up toxins and nasty elements, so it's sort of like a nature spirit. Sort of. A weird victorian smokestack fairy.
Mr Mime may seem odd being fairy may seem odd to some but his entire thing is being a silly goofball that loves tricking people. Classic goblin energy.
Klefki.. Yeah, also strange. But it is based on mischievous spirits that steal your stuff like keys so again trickster kinda deal. Hell it has the prankster ability, says it all.

Most ridiculous though are most of the retrofit Fairies, like Marill and Snubbull, who should logically be the most obvious for why they had a type added.

My favorite ever since they've been released is Absol
They are so cool! And the only reason why it's dark type is because people mistakenly think it's a harbinger of doom, when it's only trying to save everyone T_T
We don't deserve Absol, but they still try to help us anyways

Even things like Purrloin/Liepard has more of an "alley cat" thing to it, and Ghost/Psychic stuff is based on things like Goth culture, aliens/fetuses, and things you'd see in more commercialized horror settings (chandelure and Cofagrigus as "classic ghost house" and "Mummy Sarcophagus"), etc.
So you could argue Unova has sort of "pushed" the kind of spirituality or folklore creatures Fairy sometimes represents (and even the "cutesy" things too, given the whole "America likes things more hardcore" stereotype).
But as stated - that's fitting the square Unova peg into the Round "Fairy was introduced later" hole.

So it makes sense that Unova a heavily industrialized modern region (Arguably the most modern) full of big cities would as you say have Pokemon that have adapted to fill and adapt to that urban life and environment
Plus Unova other than having some tales of Zerkrom and Reshiram doesn't really have too many myths, old tales ad legends like other regions do and if we are going by magical fairytale logic a theme you sometimes get with magical beings of those kind is that they sometimes require belief and hope in them from people to exist
You're not going to be getting much belief in magical beings and myths from punks in alleyways and office workers in skyscrapers in Unova that's for sure

But really if you want a lore reason even if its a little cliche is as we know from the events of Alpha Saphire/Omega Ruby the multiverse, parallel realities, worlds and timeliness do exist in Pokemon
We also know from Ultra Moon and Ultra Suns post game with team Rainbow Rocket with it featuring a version of Giovani who came from a world in which he and team rocket won and took over the world and he then developed technology to travel to other worlds and started recruiting evil team leaders from other worlds in which they won
We also have Looker after gen4 seemingly just random teleporting into a new different world with most of his memory wiped seemingly having somehow transported into a different universe from Gen4 to modern Pokemen
But as was said by Zinnia there are other worlds in which mega evolution doesn't exist and presumably in those worlds either the ultimate weapon which created mega energy and thus mega stones either was never used or was never created
So the TLDR is all Pokemon games prior to gen 6 take place in a different universe in which the Fairy type just doesn't exist

I don't know. I always felt like Dragons didn't need the nerf that hard. They were mostly great because most of them are pseudolegendary. (larger base stats)
They've got a couple elemental resistances, sometimes mitigated by dual typing.
But Dragon is only super effective against Dragon and resisted by Steel, so it's not like they're going to wreck things much in type advantage.
Meanwhile, Fairies have very few actual weaknesses and those have been covered a lot by dual typing. Steel / Fairy for example is pretty common. So there goes Poison / Steel weakness.
Anyways, I'm not a primary fairy type user. I did use Florghes in Gen VI.
I like paraflinching Serene Grace Togekiss though.
